What £60 a year actually pays for

Charles Musana1 September 20262 min read

A year's sponsorship at Nyantaboma is £60. People are sometimes surprised it is so little, and ask whether it can really make a difference. It can. Here is what it covers.

About three quarters goes on the child's school fees for three terms, which is what pays our teachers. The rest is put towards the things that decide whether a child can actually attend: a uniform, exercise books, and a contribution to the school meals programme.

What sponsorship really buys is certainty. A sponsored child is not sent home when the harvest is poor. They start on the first day of term and finish on the last. Over seven years of primary school, that adds up to something close to an extra year in class.
